Make sure a contractor has an active license and the correct license for the job. Also check to see if there are any complaints against them, they are bonded and have current workers' compensation insurance
Compare the license classification description to the work being provided. Many contractors will try to sell you work they are not qualified nor licensed to perform
File complaints against unlicensed individuals actively working on a construction project where the cost for labor and materials is $500 or more

Check for BBB complaints against a contractor before hiring
Check the criminal record of a contractor or company owners (OC only)
